What is Finasteride?
Finasteride, also known by its brand names: Proscar and Propecia, is a well-known male medicine to treat hair loss and enlarged prostate. It is also available as a generic drug. It reduces the amount of the hormone DHT (di-hydro-testosterone). DHT is the main culprit when it comes to hereditary hair loss. When your hair follicles are sensitive to DHT, this leads to hair loss and eventually baldness. This also occurs in women. However, Finasteride is generally not prescribed to women, only in exceptional cases, because of its drastic effect on the hormone balance.
Hello hair, but goodbye libido?
Gentlemen, what if the use of Finasteride does ensure more hair growth, but this is at the expense of a decrease in sexual capacity and your libido? Finasteride can decrease the amount of semen released during sex in some men. Although relatively harmless, the condition can persist even after treatment has been stopped.
Apart from the lack of sex drive, you may also have problems getting or maintaining an erection, ejaculation disorder and / or skin rashes.
Other side effects?
Although this does not occur in most men, taking Finasteride can cause more serious side effects, such as a breast lump, nipple discharge, breast enlargement / tenderness / pain, pain in the testicles, inability to urinate and even depression.
It can also cause allergic reactions such as itching / swelling (especially of the face / tongue / throat), severe dizziness, difficulty breathing.
